Glucose 13C6
A key ¹³C tracer for metabolic research, flux analysis and protein NMR
D-Glucose (U-¹³C₆) is glucose in which all six carbon atoms are carbon-13. Cells use it like natural glucose, and every metabolite made from it carries a ¹³C signature that mass spectrometry and NMR can follow. Carbon-13 is stable and non-radioactive, so this tracer suits cell, animal and human studies.
Applications
Metabolic flux analysis
Follow glucose carbon through glycolysis, the pentose phosphate pathway and the TCA cycle. Isotopologue patterns measured by GC-MS, LC-MS or NMR reveal pathway activity in cancer cells, immune cells and production cell lines.
In vivo tracer studies
Infused or given orally, it shows how tissues use glucose in vivo, from animal models to clinical research. Whole-body glucose oxidation can also be followed as ¹³CO₂ in breath.
Biomolecular NMR
Used as the sole carbon source in minimal media, it produces uniformly ¹³C-enriched recombinant proteins. Combined with ¹⁵N ammonium chloride, it supports structure and dynamics studies by NMR.
Metabolomics and quantitative MS
Its +6 Da mass shift makes it a reliable internal standard for glucose quantification by isotope dilution mass spectrometry. It is also used in stable isotope-resolved metabolomics.
